The secret to turning your vision into reality

If you’re reading this blog post, I’m pretty sure it’s because you have a vision.  Your vision is what makes you stand out from the crowd, it’s the vehicle through which you make an impact in the world. It’s what made you venture out into the great unknown that is entrepreneurship or freelancing

But as it turns out, having a vision is the easy part.  Turning it into a reality is what separates the success stories from the strugglers.

Now, ups and downs are a part of entrepreneurship, so success is not about removing the risk (that would be futile). What success does rely upon, is a plan to back up the vision. Then another plan when that one doesn’t work.

Do you have a plan?

goal setting tips

In my last blog post, I shared the vital step most people miss when making plans and setting goals (missed it? You can read that here.)

Today we’re going to build upon that step and create goals that are meaningful and STICK!

Creating goals (or to think about it another way, making a list of everything you’d like to be, do or have) is the next step to making your vision a reality.  When we’re vague and passive about stating our wishes, the results we get reflect that. When we’re clear, and inject those wishes with meaning and feeling, we’re much more likely to take the steps needed to make them happen (or at least get on the path to what we want).

In this exercise, you’re going to brainstorm everything you’d to be, do or have in:

  • your lifetime
  • in 3 years
  • in 1 year
  • in 3 months

Set the timer for 5 minutes for each section and using the format below start downloading everything that comes to mind. Don’t censor your thoughts, or worry about how you’d make it happen, just let your mind and creativity go wild.

Now circle ONE goal or wish in each section that will create the most positive impact in your life right now.  Choose one to be your 90-day goal (notice how that times nicely with our work together?!).  Using the worksheet below, put your goal at the center with a date, 3 months from now below it.  That’s when you’re going to make this happen. Now, draw a line from the box with a task that would help you achieve that goal. Keep going until you’ve listed everything you can think of.

Here’s why this simple process is so powerful; when you take the time to articulate what you really want, and drill down to actionable steps you can take right now, you have taken control of your business. And that feels good!
